A Journey Towards Social Concern and Sustainable Development
Sujalajalayana-Watershed Programme
  • It is an integrated natural resource management project sponsored by World Bank in collaboration with Government of Karnataska
  • It has been implemented in 15 Villages of Dharwad taluka and has been successfully completed by achieving 94% of its progress
  • The aim of the programme is to promote overall development of forming community through watershed activities to improve productivity and fertility in Drought-prone areas
  • The key watershed activities and interventions are mainly
    Conservation of soil and water
    Promotion of dry land horticulture and social forestry
    Livestock and fodder development
    Formation of Self Help Groups for the landless labours
    Promotion of entrepreneurship for skilled and unskilled mass
  • Belgaum Diocesan Social Service Society has developed the area of 8761 hectares spread over in 12 micro watershed covering 15 villages through people participation
  • Under social sector 105 SHGs are formed involving 1468 women members and 72 area groups covering the farmers of watershed area
  • These sanghas are practically involved in planning, processing and implementation with the help of our field staff
  • BDSSS main concern is human resource development through the process of social mobilization, capacity building, empowerment of the marginalized landless labours to undertake income generation activities
  • 1468 landless women labours in Dharwad taluka have been sponsored with Rs 81 lakhs from World Bank to initiate Income Generation Programme for their livelihood sustenance. 
  • Agriculture Development and Environment Promotion Programmes

    • 207 small and marginal farmers have emerged as Technology User’s Group (TUG) and are availing first time experience in participatory approach of technology transfer to their field in 5 villages of Dharwad taluka.

    • 10 Joint Liability Group (JLG) formed and trained on technology transfer aspect through the help of NABARD and University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS)

    • 86 farmers comprising of 80 hectares avail knowledge on enhancement of mango orchard and a cheque of Rs.15,000/- per hectare is been distributed for rejuvenation of mango orchards

    • 198 SC farmers availed vegetable seeds and compost, and 310 general farmers availed medicine and compost from Horticulture Department

    • 88 farmers avail rejuvenation of old mango orchards of 80 hectares at Khalghatgi under National Horticulture Mission

    • 421 village members avail knowledge on the importance of good environment and take initiative in developing nurseries in collaboration with social forest department

    • Vanamahotsava was being celebrated along with the village leaders, Gramapanchayath members, Forest department officers, SHG members, school headmasters, villagers and children in promoting environment

    • 880 saplings are planted under the initiative of SHG members
